A guide to hanging wallpaper

Paperhands began in 2009, creating handcrafted wallpaper curiosities. The designs are all drawn by Ben, and screen printed by hand.

PAPER BASED WALLPAPERS

Paperhands wallpapers are crafted using sustainably sourced timber, a claycoat sealer and waterbased inks.

As with with all non-vinyl wallpapers, the paper becomes ’soft' when wet with wallpaper adhesive, which is why care is required. Because the paper is hand printed, there will always be some natural variation in the screening. All orders come from the same batch, and all the rolls from a batch use the same paper and ink.

When your paper arrives, please check for any visual differences that you are unhappy with, and if you find any, contact the team prior to cutting or installing. Paperhands will not accept liability once the product is on the wall.

We caution you that there is no substitute for experience when it comes to hanging wallpaper — use a qualified and experienced tradesperson if you can. If you encounter any problems during hanging stop immediately and contact Paperhands or your supplier. Paperhands cannot accept liability for rehanging costs

HANGING INSTRUCTIONS

It is crucial to prepare the wall surface properly before installing wallpaper. Any variation in surface may show through the paper. To begin, walls need to be clean, dry and sound. Sanding and filling may be required. Existing coverings should be stripped, surfaces washed (with sugar soap) and sized. If the surface is new, it should be sealed with pigmented sealer and sized. Any colour variation on the surface should be painted over or lined. Paperhands recommended cross lining walls with lining paper for the best results.

Paperhands rolls are supplied trimmed and ready for hanging.

Ensure you mix waterbased paste to the manufacturers directions, avoiding lumps (we recommend ShurStik). . Remove any electrical face plates including light fittings after turning off the power. Take your time and plan ahead

Begin with a plumbline, working away from the light. Ensure the wall size is dry. Check the drop lengths and pattern repeats, allowing approx 50mm top and bottom for trimming.

Apply paste to back of paper and book for 5min, only work 1 paper ahead. Paste liberally and especially at the edges. Butt the joins, they should not overlap, gently sliding the paper into the join.

We do not recommend using a seam roller. Brush the paper smooth and wipe any excess paste with a clean damp cloth or sponge. Paste left on the surface of the paper may cause damage.

A coloured paste (which dries clear, such as ‘So Ezy’ can help applied to the wall at the joins so you can ensure complete coverage. Trimming or cutting should be done with a sharp blade (9mm snap-off cutter) and the use of a steel edge, a 100-150mm joint knife or scraper is ideal.

With dark papers we suggest a thin water colour paint to tint the paper edges, mix the included paint with water till watery, once the paper is dry use a small brush and brush into paper joins, wipe any excess off after 30 seconds.Do not  attempt to fast dry the paper, and avoid direct sunlight.

Allow to dry slowly and evenly.
